Legacy Conversations: The Value of Introducing Ethical Wills Into Client Conversations
Susan Turnbull, Principal, Personal Legacy Advisors

The Partnership for Philanthropic Planning is pleased to introduce Susan Turnbull as this year’s Annual Meeting Keynote speaker. This year’s program is dedicated to the memory of founder, past president, and philanthropy advocate Richard Ely.

The practical wisdom of the admonition, “Start with the end in mind,” would seem to find its ultimate expression in working with individual and couples on their estate and legacy plans. But what is this amorphous thing called “legacy” anyway? And how do you get clients to talk about a vision for their own?

Susan Turnbull’s presentation will provide an in-depth exploration of the concept of the ethical will and why it is such an effective lever for breaking new ground in conversations with your clients about their values, their history, their families and their vision for their legacy – in both its tangible and intangible dimensions. In this philosophical and practical look at ethical wills and expressions of donor intent, you will see how they fit into the work you are already doing, and understand the value of opening clients’ imaginations about not only what they want their heirs to receive in a material sense, but also what they want them to know and to understand.

Susan is the Principal of Personal Legacy Advisors and a pioneering advocate for the value of non-binding personal legacy documents as meaningful components of estate, financial and philanthropic planning. A professional writer and speaker, she has ghostwritten and edited numerous ethical wills and personal histories, is the author of The Wealth of Your Life: A Step-by-Step Guide for Creating Your Ethical Will and co-author of Between Generations: A Five Step Guide for Creating an Expression of Donor Intent. She is also the creator of LifeLegacy Cards, prompts for insightful conversation and writing. Susan lives in greater Boston.
